Jan Fransse VanHoesen

Jan Fransse VanHoesen was born 1608 in  Husum,Schleswig, Holstein,Holland, and died bef. 1667 in Claverick, Albany Co.,NY.  He married Volkje Jurians May 15, 1639 in Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam, Holland.  She was born 1618 in Island of Noorstrand, and died 1703 in Claverick,Albany Co.,NY.

During the time Jan Fransse lived in Husum, which is in an area known as Schleswig- Holstein, it was ruled by the Danes. All records show that he was of Dutch decent. He left Husum during what was known as the 30 Years War with Purssia and Austria.

After he left Husum, he went to Amsterdam where he married Volckje Juriaens. The church records show that...."appeared on April 30, 1639, Jan Franz from Housom, sailor, age 30 years, living in the Corte Tuijnstraat, having no parents but assisted by his cousin, Anna Jans, and Volckje Juriaens from Noorstrat, age about 21 years, having no parents but assisted by her acquaintance, Isaack Pietersen." They were married on May 15, 1639.

In March, Jan Fransse had signed an agreement with Kiliaen Van Renselaer concerning immediate passage to and settlement in the colony of Rensselaerswyck. They arrived in New Amsterdam on July 7, 1639.

Jan Fransse was a Commissioner of Lands for the Dutch West India Co., and was an early settler of Ft. Orange, now Albany, N.Y. In 1662 he bought from the Indians, for 500 guilders in beavers, land at Claverack and several hundred acres of land along the river where today is the city of Hudson, N.Y.

The surname originated from his birthplace. It changed many times in spelling and pronunciation. While Jan Fransse lived in New York, the surname was VanHoosen. When the family moved to Pa., it was changed to VanHoosen, and VanHoose. The surname VanHooser appeared first in the N.C. records. The spelling VanHuss appears only in Wash., and Lee Co., Va. and in Carter and Johnson Co., Tennessee.

After Jan Fransse died, Volkje married Garrit Visbeeck. She had one sister, Annetje Juriaens, who came to America and was the wife of Andres Herbertz Constapel from 1640 to 1662. He was a gunner for a ship from 1659 to 62. He was severely wounded with a knife in a tavern brawl by Seger Cornelisy, and died Oct. 1662.

JAN Fransse VAN HUSUM was the first Van Hoesen that came to America.  He was born about 1608/9 in the city of Husum in the province of Schleswig in northern Germany, now called Schleswig-Holstein. For many years this piece of land was fought over by Denmark and Germany. At times it belonged to Denmark and other times to Germany. Today it's located in northern Germany.

When Jan Fransse left Husum in 1639, the Dutch Domunine (pastor) changed his name from the Danish of Fransse to the Dutch name of Frantz. The suffix "tz" means the "son of" in Dutch. His name was further changed by adding "Van Husum", which distinguished him from any other Jan Frantz indicating he was from the town of Husum. "Van" in Dutch means "from." In German "Von" also means "from."

Jan Frantz Van Husum wasn't Dutch as many people have supposed. Neither was he German. He was a Schleswigan subjected to Danish rule. He spoke low German, probably with a Fisian or Danish dialect. However,  after three generations of living among the Dutch settlers in New Netherlands, his descendants gradually became Dutch by association. There were also more emigrants in New Netherlands who were Danish, Frisian and Schleswigan than Dutch.
